Brief Biography Of Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader as well as the head of state of Tibet. He is the fourteenth Dalai Lama and his name is Tenzin Gyatso. However, this is not his birth name. When he was born on 6 July 1935 to a farmer and his wife in a small village called Taktser in northeastern part of Tibet, he was christened Lhamo Dhondup. However, when the Dalai Lama was just 2 years old, he was believed to be the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, whose name was Thubten Gyatso. |

When he was 6 years old, he began his education in a Tibetan monastery. He studied logic, Tibetan art, Tibetan culture, Sanskrit, medicine and Buddhist philosophy along with music, drama, astrology, synonyms, and motre and phrasing. When he was 23 years old, the Dalai Lama appeared for his final examination at the Jokhang Temple located in Lhasa. He finished the examination with honors, and was given the Geshe Lharampa degree, which is equivalent to getting a doctorate in Buddhist philosophy.
Unfortunately, Tibet was invaded by China in the year 1949, and this prompted the Tibetans to request the Dalai Lama to take over the entire political power of the tiny nation. The Dalai Lama went to China to hold peace talks with the Chinese leaders in the 1954. However, it did not reap any result. Instead, Tibetans had to face military suppression when they tried to rise against the Chinese in 1959. This forced His Holiness to run away from Tibet and live in exile. He made his way to Dharamsala in northern part of India.
After the Chinese invaded Tibet, the Dalai Lama presented his nation's case in front of the United Nations, which adopted 3 resolution, namely in 1959, in 1961 and another one in 1965. Also, in the year 1963, the Dalai Lama put forth a draft constitution for Tibet, so that administrative set up could be democratized. Then, in the year 1992, His Holiness put forth the guidelines for setting up the constitution for free Tibet. This proclaimed that on receiving its freedom, the first task of the interim government would be to have an assembly constitutionally elected, and this assembly would first frame and then adopt the democratic constitution of the country.
In the year 1989, the Dalai Lama was conferred the Nobel Peace Prize for using non-violent methods to get Tibet's freedom. Today, the Dalai Lama has forgone his political powers and is just considered as the spiritual leader of Tibetans world over. It was a decision he took after a lot of thought, as he felt that it was time for someone younger to take over the mantle.
