Mel Gibson came from a large family of eleven children and he was child number six. His parents were Hutton and Anne Patricia and they christened their sixth child and second son Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson. Gibson came from a family of performers, as his grandmother from his father's side was an opera singer in Australia. In fact, one of Mel's brother, Donal, is also an actor in his own rights. As Mel's mother was of Irish descent, he holds dual citizenship -- Australian and Irish.

When the Gibson family relocated to Australia, Mel finished his high school from the St. Leo's Catholic College located in New South Wales. However, it was when Mel forayed into acting that he was immediately noticed for his acting talents. He was even compared to a young Steve McQueen by some critics, while others thought that he was a perfect blend of Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart. Though Mel was known as an action hero due to his films Mad Max and Lethal Weapon series, he also acted in dramas, such as Hamlet, and comedies, such as Maverick and What Women Want. His first directorial project was the movie The Man Without A Face and then he went on to give classics such as Braveheart in the year 1995, The Passion of Christ in the year 2004 and Apocalypto in the year 2006. May fans may not know that Mel Gibson was offered the role of James Bond, but he declined it because he was afraid that he would get typecast.

Mel's first American movie was a drama entitled The River in which he acted with Sissy Spacek. He then went on to act in Mrs Soffel. Then in the year 1985, Mel took 2 years off from acting and spent his time in his cattle ranch in Australia. He returned to the acting scene with Lethal Weapon to perform his most popular character, Martin Riggs. This movie established Mel as one of the leading men in Hollywood. Thereafter, he acted in Tequila Sunrise and Lethal Weapon 2. In 2002, Mel acted in Signs, a movie by M. Night Shyamalan and this movie went on to become highest grossing movie of his entire career.

On a personal front, Mel was married to Robyn Denise Moore, who he met in the late 1970s while he was still not a known star. They got married on June 7, 1980 and went on to have seven children, one girl and six boys. Mel is also a grandfather, as he two grandchildren. What was suppose to be a strong marriage broke down in 2006 when the couple separated after being married for 26 years. The couple got divorced in April 2009. However, while the divorce was going on, Mel was photographed with Oksana Grigorieva, who is a pianist from Russia. The two lived together and even had a daughter named Lucia on October 30, 2009. However, in June 2010, Grigorieva took out a restraining order against Mel and he was being investigated for domestic violence.

Ever since the breakup of his marriage with Robyn, Mel Gibson seems to have lost his way. He was caught on tape shouting anti-Semitic and racist slurs as police officers after being stopped for drunk driving, he has also made misogynist comments. However, Mel claims that none of these reflect his true beliefs and opinions. As Mel Gibson fans we can only hope that what he says is true.
