Rowe is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. His life story is rather interesting. For instance, on 2 January 1979 Rowe became an Eagle Scout in Troop 16. As an Eagle Scout, he was in-charge of reading stores to students from the Maryland School for the Blind. It is during this project that Rowe got interested in writing and narrating. As a youngster, Rowe used to attend service at the Kenwood Presbyterian Church. In fact, his parents still attend service in the same church. While studying at the Overlea High School, Rowe was a member of the school's theater group and choir. He did well in both these spheres. Many Rowe fans may find it strange to hear that Rowe used to stutter when he was young, but he overcame the stuttering while he was in school.
After finishing high school, Rowe joined the Essex Community College where he sang for the Chorus of the Chesapeake. Then he moved on to Towson University, where he earned a degree in communication studies. In addition, Rowe was a member of the Baltimore Opera, but he claims that he joined the opera to meet girls.
In the early part of the 1990s, Rowe became a host for shop at home television channel, QVC. This was the time when he was still with Baltimore Opera. He claims that he was dressed up as a Viking and his friend bet him that he would not be able to get a job with QVC. Rowe took on the challenge and was offered a job on the spot. Rowe even claims that he was fired three times by QVC. Whether there is any fact to this is not sure, as Rowe is famous for his sense of humor.
Besides QVC, Rowe has been a host for several other programs, such as Your New Home, Worst Case Scenarios, On Air TV, The Most, No Relation, New York Expeditions and Channel 999. From the year 2001 to 2005, he hosted the Evening Magazine in San Francisco for KPIX TV. It was during this stint that he did some episodes for a program called Somebody's Gotta Do It, which spoke about unpleasant jobs. It was this program that ultimately became Dirty Jobs. However, the first program that Rowe did for Discovery channel was Egypt Week Live! where he checked out ancient Egyptian tombs live along with an Egyptian archaeologist named Dr Zahi Hawass.
