When she was a young actress, she was quite renowned for acting in musicals, such as An American in Paris, Lili, Daddy Long Legs and Gigi. However, she also acted in non-musical movies, such as Fanny, L-Shaped Room and Father Goose, which became extremely popular. Her dancing abilities saw her essaying roles with Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolf Nureyev.

Leslie was born on July 1, 1931 in Boulogne-sur-Seine in France to Margaret and Claude Caron. Her mother was an American dancer, while her father was French and a chemist. It is said that her mother trained her from childhood to start a career in entertainment. Initially, Leslie was a ballet dancer, and was discovered by Gene Kelly, who got her to act opposite him in An American in Paris. This was her opening into Hollywood and Leslie ended up penning a long term contract with MGM. She went on to act in Lili in 1953 which was another musical. Her performance in the movie earned her a nomination for the best actress at the Oscars. She was nominated once again for the Oscars for her acting in the drama, The L-Shaped Room. By the time the 1960s came along, Leslie was acting in European as well as Hollywood movies. She became a jury member for the 39th Berlin International Film Festival in 1989. And, then went on to act in the movie Chocolat in the year 2000.

The popularity of Leslie is so high that she received her own star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2009.

Leslie got married in 1951 to George Hormel II, but the couple divorced in 1954. She then got married once more in 1956 to Peter Hall, who was a theater director from Britain. They have two children Christopher John and Jenny. However, once more the happy ever after did not happen and Leslie got divorced a second time in 1965 after Leslie had an affair with Warren Beatty in 1961. Thereafter, Leslie went on to marry a third time in 1969 to Michael Laughlin. But, this marriage too ended in a divorce in 1980. Thereafter, there were rumors that Leslie was involved with Robert Wolders, a television actor from The Netherlands, and this relationship lasted for a year.

As her mother was an American citizen, Leslie became an American citizen in the year that Barack Obama was elected as the US president. She claims that she got her citizen just in time to cast her ballot for Obama.
