Whoopi Goldberg Biography

Whoopi Goldberg is a stage name for Caryn Elaine Johnson, a famous Hollywood actress, comedienne, singer, song writer, talk show host and political activist. She was born on 13 November 1955 to Emma and Robert James Johnson, Jr. in Chelsea, Manhattan. Her mother was a teacher and nurse, while her father was a clergyman. Unfortunately, Whoopi's father did not stay with the family and it was left to her mother to raise the family alone.

Many fans of the Sister Act actress may wonder why Whoopi took on such a strange and weird stage name. According to her, when a person has a little gas, they should let it go. At least she did that and the people around her used to say that she sounded like a whoopee cushion. Hence, the first name. With regard to the Goldberg part of her name, she opted for a German Jewish family name, as her mother felt that their family name, Johnson, did not sound Jewish enough to make her daughter into a star. Goldberg has also been a life long Star Trek fan after seeing Nichelle Nichols act as Uhura in the serial. She was fascinated by this, as this was the first time she had seen an African American actress on television who was not acting as a maid. This love for Star Trek prompted Whoopi to take a recurring role in the Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Whoopi's debut movie in Hollywood was in the year 1985 with The Color Purple, where she essayed the role of Celie, an African American woman living in Deep South and being mistreated by the people. This role earned Whoopi an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe. She went on to act in Ghost along with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. This role won her another Golden Globe and also an Oscar for the best supporting actress. Whoopi went on to act in many other Hollywood movies, such as Sister Act, Sister Act 2, Made in America, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Girl Interrupted, Jumpin' Jack Flash, and Rat Race. She has even lent her voice for Toy Story 3.

Whoopi married Alvin Martin 1973 and had one daughter through this marriage. However, the marriage did not last and the couple divorced in 1979. She went on to marry David Claessen in 1986, but this too ended in a divorce in 1988. Finally, she married Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994. Unfortunately, her third marriage also ended in a divorce in the year 1995. It is claimed that she had a romantic relationship with Ted Danson and Frank Langella.
