Jump Drive History

Today, many people share data with one another. While their Internet is a mode of sharing data, there is another method of sharing, which is using a jump drive. We take jump drive for granted because it has been around for some time now. The jump drive, also known as USB flash drive, allows a person to transfer data from one computer to another. Also, it is an external mode of storage for many people, as there are jump drives available with different storage capacities, some ranging into gigabytes.

The success of a jump drive lies in the way it works. It does not require charging nor does it need an external source of power to work. On its own, it can function as a storage device, which is small and compact. And hence, it can be carried around by users even in their pockets. Nearly, everyone who owns a desktop computer or laptop will necessarily invest in a jump drive.

This handy accessory that many of us cannot live without today has an interesting history. Most people do not know anything about the jump drive history or who the inventor of this external storage device was. The credit for inventing the jump drive goes to a gentleman called Dov Moran. He invented this fabulous storage device in the year 1998. Moran was employed with a company called M-systems where he was working on a USB interface known as NAND. Using Moran's expertise and knowledge, the company developed its first jump drive. This device was marketed first in Europe and was called Disgo. While this device had a different design compared to the jump drives that we use today, M-systems is still the first company that was responsible for introducing the device to people across the world.

Thereafter, in the year 200, an engineering student from Malaysia named Pua Khein Seng collected some engineers and formed his own business. All these engineers worked hard to develop a jump drive, whose controller was on a chip. As a result, the size of the jump drive became small and more efficient to use. However, Seng's company did not have the necessary money or the presence in the world market to begin developing and marketing this new storage device. So, the company approached Toshiba to make and market the device. Toshiba realized the potential of the device immediately showed interest in this new device.

Soon after Toshiba showed its interest in the new design of the jump drive, a company named Trek Technology began suing manufacturers of jump drive for infringing their copyrights. It appeared that this new device by Seng was quite similar to the jump drive that Trek Technology was manufacturing. However, the case was thrown out of the court, as it felt that the interpretation of copyrights law made by Trek Technology was general. More companies jumped into the fray that were also developing their own jump drives. Some of these companies included M-systems and Netac. However, all their cases pertaining to copyrights infringements were thrown out of the court, as the law felt that their claims were too general and did not warrant a hearing.

Regardless of the jump drive history, we all know that it is impossible for most of us to function without one. Today, most of us carry important data on USB storage drives that allow us to plug in the drive in any computer and access the data that is stored in it. A jump drive can be used for storing images, text, games and anything in between. We can also share data using a jump drive, which can even be formatted. Hence, the risk of getting virus from external source on a computer or laptop gets minimized. Truly, a device that is extremely handy and we cannot live without.
