Who Invented The Flash Drive
| Perhaps, USB flash drive is one of the most significant computer gadgets in this decade. The size of USB flash drive is relatively small, comparing to its predecessor like the floppy disk. Today, flash drive storage capacities are quite large. The invention of USB flash drives make quick data transfer, stable data storage, and portable storage devices possible. The invention of USB flash drive contributes an important role to bring the world into age of information and technology. |

Who Invented The Flash Drive? :
Dov Moran of M-Systems is widely acknowledged as the founder of USB flash drive. He claimed on EE Times that he first figured out the concept of USB flash drive in 1998 after having computer troubles during presentation to investors.
But, since the technology of USB flash drive is built upon the combination of other technologies, the credit for development must be shared across several companies. Up to date, there are 4 companies who claim the credit of the invention: Netac Technology, Trek Technology, Pua Khein Seng of Phison Electronics, and Dov Moran of M-Systems.
The patent lawsuit for the invention credit of USB flash drive was a legal mess. Both Netac Technology and Trek Technology attempted to patent for the invention. Netac claimed that it invented flash drive in 1999, and Singapore court awarded a patent to the company in 2007.
Trek technology was also awarded a patent. However, its patent was revoked back by the UK court in 2006.
Unfortunately, today, most USB flash drive manufacturers like Sony, Lenovo, PNY Technologies, Acer produce the product without regard of Nectac or Trek’s patents.
In the year of 2000, M-Systems has released the first USB flash drive. Unfortunately, TrekTechnology and Netac started releasing their products around the same time as well.
The first generation of USB flash drive was released commercially in 2000 by Trek Technology and IBM under the brandname “ThumbDrive”. First generation of USB Flash drive only had 8MB storage capacity. Today, an average USB flash drive can hold over 2GB or more. It is estimated that over 51 million USB million USB flash drives were sold per year. Since its invention, USB flash drive became an important tool for data backup and system administration, and it is used in almost every home and office throughout the world.
