Subway Sandwiches History

Subway, a famous sandwich chain in America and other parts of the world, promotes itself as a healthy sandwich place that can help people lose all those extra pounds they are carrying. While some may agree with this concept of the Subway, others will disagree. Nonetheless, Subway sandwiches are extremely popular in different parts of the world and in some places, it has reached iconic status. Today, Subway is also helping the government to fight child obesity, which has reached epidemic proportions in the United States.

However, in order to understand the concept of Subway sandwiches, it is necessary to delve into the history of the sandwiches. The man behind Subway was a young high school student called Fred DeLuca. He was planning on going to college to become a doctor, but did not have the money to pay for further education. So, a family friend called Dr Peter Buck advised him to start a submarine sandwich store to help save money for college education. Dr Buck offered DeLuca a loan of $1,000 to start the submarine sandwich store and also became a partner in the business. This business ended up changing the fast food industry forever.

The first Subway sandwich store opened in August 1965 in Bridgeport in Connecticut. The business partners set a goal for themselves -- they wanted to open 32 stores in the next 10 years. As the store attracted customers, DeLuca realized the importance of having outstanding customer service, high quality food and service and low cost. This helped him lay the foundation for the success of his business venture.

By the time 1974 came along, there were 16 stores spread around the state of Connecticut. This made DeLuca realize that he would not be able to reach his business goal of 32 stores. So, to realize his business goal, he began franchising and this led to the formation of Subway as a brand. In just 4 years, the number had grown from 16 stores to 100 Subway stores.

Today, Subway is a name to reckon with in the fast food industry. The brand has more than 30,000 franchises all over the world and is present in about 87 countries. People can enter any Subway store in any corner of the world and ask for tailor made sandwiches, which are prepared with fresh and delicious vegetables and ingredients. The service is fast and the staff are friendly and well-mannered. All Subway stores have menus that highlight calories in each sandwich. People can check out the calories and then decide to remove ingredients or add ingredients to make it a wholesome and nutritious meal on its own.

Thanks to Fred DeLuca and Dr Peter Buck, today people have access to this delicious sandwich store, which started out as Pete's Sandwich and later changed to Pete's Submarines. Today, people know this brand as Subway and can consume the sandwiches without any fear. The franchises in different countries have adapted to the local cuisine and religious beliefs, while still offering their regular sandwiches. For instance, in Islamic countries, the meat used in the sandwiches is halal, while in India, the Subway franchises do not serve any beef. In Cleveland, Ohio, Subway has opened its first kosher sandwich outlet in the year 2011. The brand has been continuously voted as number one global franchise in the world. This speaks volume about it, doesn't it?

So, the next time you are looking for a healthy meal, you can stop at a Subway store and pick a sandwich that titillates your palate. However, it is important to note that no medical association or doctor has given a green signal to Subway sandwiches as a way to lose weight. So, be careful what you add into your sandwich when ordering it. But, you can still sit back and dig into a delicious submarine without feeling guilty.
