Subway Sandwiches History

However, in order to understand the concept of Subway sandwiches, it is necessary to delve into the history of the sandwiches. The man behind Subway was a young high school student called Fred DeLuca. He was planning on going to college to become a doctor, but did not have the money to pay for further education. So, a family friend called Dr Peter Buck advised him to start a submarine sandwich store to help save money for college education. Dr Buck offered DeLuca a loan of $1,000 to start the submarine sandwich store and also became a partner in the business. This business ended up changing the fast food industry forever.

The first Subway sandwich store opened in August 1965 in Bridgeport in Connecticut. The business partners set a goal for themselves -- they wanted to open 32 stores in the next 10 years. As the store attracted customers, DeLuca realized the importance of having outstanding customer service, high quality food and service and low cost. This helped him lay the foundation for the success of his business venture. More...

History Of Japan Food And Cuisine

History Of Japan Food And Cuisine

The history of Japan food and cuisine is more than 2,000 years old, and has been influenced greatly by the cuisines of Korea and China. However, it is only in the last three hundred to four hundred years that the different influences on Japanese food and cuisines collated to form what we today know as Japan food and cuisine. Imagine what life would have been for Japanese food lovers without sushi and sake?

If you really enjoy the cuisine from Far East, then finding out more about the history of Japan food and cuisine will allow you to appreciate the food even more. Initially, the cuisine from Japan was influenced by Korea in 400 BC when rice was brought into the country. The rice growing methods came to Japan from Korea during the Yayoi era when tribal people came to settle down in the country. After rice, the country saw the introduction of soy beans and wheat, which came from China. The three foods became the main ingredients in Japanese cuisine.

However, religion had a role to play in the food and cuisine of Japan. In the 6th century when Buddhism became the main religion of country, meat and fish became forbidden foods. In 675 AD, on royal decree, it became a sacrilege to consume cattle, dogs, horses, chickens and monkeys. Furthermore, in the 8th and 9th centuries more royal decrees were issued and killing of animals were prohibited. As a result, practically all mammals were prohibited and the Japanese people were just allowed to consume whales, which were termed as fish. However, consumption of game meat continued as hunters continued to hunt in the forests. At that point Japan did not have any animal breeding, so this kept the meat consumption low. More...

History Of Red Beans And Rice

History Of Red Beans And Rice

Anyone in America will tell you about red beans and rice, which is a famous and popular dish from New Orleans. Just the thought of consuming this dish can make people salivate and yearn to taste this delicious and mouth-watering dish. The history of red beans and rice is extremely interesting, as it developed more out of the need to do house work rather than looking to innovate a scrumptious meal.

In the days gone by, red beans and dish was traditionally consumed in New Orleans on Mondays. It was made primarily as a way to use up the remaining ham bone that was served for dinner on a Sunday. Also, Mondays were kept by housewives to clean their homes and do their washing, so they did not have the time to stand for long hours in front of the stove. So, these wives came up with an innovative dish that practically cooked on its own on the stove.

Beans are not new to Louisiana. In fact, the Native American tribes living in this region were cultivating beans long before the Europeans came in. The beans that they grew included red beans, runner beans and lima beans. However, when the Europeans came, they brought their own beans, which include lentils, garbanzos and legumes. More...
