10 )Recently when Prince William married Catherine Middleton, this fairy tale wedding was broadcast all over the world. It was a happy day for the couple and it was the second time a royal wedding was being broadcast around the world, the first being that of Lady Diana and Prince Charles, parents of Prince William. However, not too many people know that the original family name of the British royal family was Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. However, during the First World War, the name was changed to Windsor as it was too German sounding. This occurred in the year 1917.
9 )We all know that Nero fiddled while Rome burned. But, he was also known for his extravagances. In the palace's dining room, the roof revolved throughout the day (and night). The architects who designed the roof had installed a special mechanism that the slaves worked and this caused the ceiling to revolve. While this happened, rose petals and perfume used to fall on the diners. In fact, one particular diner suffocated to death, as too many rose petals fell from the ceiling.
8 )When Black Death (or bubonic plague) was rampaging through Europe in the 14th century, doctors did not have a clue why the disease occurred. All they knew that it was highly contagious and killed anyone who came near a sick person. So, doctors devised their own biohazard suits that they hoped would protect them from this deadly disease. The suit consisted of a headpiece that had a large beak. This was filled with fragrant oils and vinegar or any other strong smelling compound, so that the doctors could bear the smell of the putrid bodies and dying patients. This was the first ever biohazard suit invented and it is quite possible that this was used as a basis for making biohazard suits centuries later.
7 ) In the year 1885, a cube made out of carbon, iron and nickel was discovered in Austria in a coalmine. The coalmine was more than 12 to 70 million years old and based on this, it was estimated that the cube developed some time in the Tertiary period. When the scientists saw the cube, its shape was perfect and this led them to believe that humans had made it. However, as we all know that no humans were in existence during the Tertiary period. Hence, the question that scientists pose is who made the cube. Was it a meteorite or was it an advanced pre-historic society that made this devise? No plausible theory has been able to explain how this cube got where it did.
6 )The people of America are proud of their history, especially their independence from colonial Britain. Independence Day in America is celebrated on 4th July when the Declaration of Independence was signed by the Congressional members. What many people do not know is that just two members, John Hancock and Charles Thomson, signed the Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776. Most other members signed the Declaration on August 2, 1776 and the last member signed it nearly 5 years later!
5 )Andorra is a small landlocked country in southwestern part of Europe. It is officially called the Principality of Andorra. It is situated in the Pyrenees Mountains and has France and Spain as its neighbors. However, this little country got embroiled in World War I, but when the Treaty of Versailles was signed, the signatories forgot to add Andorra in the Treaty. As a result even after the World War officially came to an end, Andorra's 11-man army was still at war with Germany. This state of war continued until the start of the World War II, which began in 1939. When this happened, this tiny country realized that it could not take part in another war, so it quickly signed a treaty with Germany which officially brought the World War I to an end!
4 ) We all know that Christopher Columbus was the discoverer of the Americas. But, can it be that some discoverers from Europe came long before Columbus? At least that is what some people are saying after the discovery of Roman coins around Americas. These coins have been found from Maine till Mexico and some of the coins found in Round Rock located in Texas were dated 800 AD. One coin found in Oklahoma was made from bronze and had the profile of Nero.
3 ) Many Bibliophiles know about the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, which were discovered in the ancient ruins of Khirbet Qumram in the West Bank between the year 1947 and 1956. Around 900 pages were found and these were dated prior to 100 AD. One particular scroll, called the Copper Scroll, was penned on thin sheet of copper and written in Hebrew. This scroll gave information on where hidden caches of gold and silver were located, and based on the description in the scroll, it is estimated that the treasure would be worth a minimum of $1 billion in today's currency. Many people who know about the Copper Scroll wonder whether this treasure is still buried and who it belonged to. Many of the locations mentioned in the scroll cannot be deciphered, but one location that can be understood is Mount Garizim. Maybe someday a lucky person will find this treasure that has been hidden from view for so many centuries.
2) Today's modern life is thanks to the technological advancements that science has made. Many of the modern equipment and devices we take for granted do not run without batteries. So, one of the most important invention of our times is the battery. But, one particular artifact discovered close to Baghdad in the year 1936 makes researchers believe that ancient people had already invented the battery more than 2,000 years ago. This ancient battery made use of vinegar or lemon juice to operate and was still capable of producing voltage. Researchers believe that this ancient battery was used for gold electroplating.
1) When the Nazis were controlling Europe, they sacked many countries off their riches and treasures. It is claimed that raided treasures and wealth are hidden in secret passages in the Bavarian Alps in Austria. However, till date no evidence has been found, though some of the claims are true. Some treasures have been found in the Bavarian Alps, and even today, a person can find gold bars there with some hard work. How much treasure lies buried in the Alps is anyone's guess. Many self-proclaimed treasure hunters often flock to the Bavarian Alps in search of this treasure. Hopefully, some day someone will be lucky enough to find this Nazi treasure, or at least a part of it.
