History Of American Airlines
Who hasn't heard of American Airlines? After all, it is the third largest airline in the world when it comes to number of passenger miles flown, size of the fleet and operating revenue. For many people, American Airlines is synonymous with America and everything American. However, the history of American Airlines is old and goes all the way back to 1926 and Charles Lindbergh. |

It all started on 15 April 1926 when Lindbergh put a bag of mail into a biplane and flew it from Chicago to St. Louis, and back. Charles Lindbergh was a pilot with Robertson Aircraft Corporation based in Missouri. This company had a contract from the US Postal Service to transport mail. Robertson Aircraft Corporation and several other aviation companies amalgamated to form the now-famous American Airlines.
The amalgamation of the several airlines began in the year 1929 when The Aviation Corporation was formed. This corporation began to acquire other aviation companies and one such company was Robertson. As aviation companies were acquired, they were merged into a single entity called the American Airways, Inc. and finally in the year 1934, the name was changed to American Airlines, as we know it today.
Today, American Airlines is a part of the AMR Corporation and is based in Texas, in Fort Worth. Its headquarters is located right next to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport; and the airlines operates not only domestic flights, but also international flights to Asia/Pacific, Latin America, South America, Europe and the Caribbean. The airline has made it to the list of Fortune 500 companies' list and holds the 120th position on that list. It is also credited as being one of the founding airlines of the Oneworld Airline Alliance.
American Airlines also holds the distinction of flying the first commercial flight using a Douglas DC-3. This momentous occasion took place 25 June 1936 and before the decade came to an end, American Airlines ended up becoming the top airline in the US where revenue passenger miles was concerned.
Furthermore, the airline also decided to venture into airline catering and this business venture started in 1942 with the establishment of a subsidiary known as Sky Chefs. The aim of the subsidiary was to provide food to not just passengers traveling on American Airlines, but also passengers flying in other airlines. This proved to be a successful business venture, which is still on going.
When the Second World War broke out, American Airlines was right there to do its patriotic duty for the nation. It converted half of its fleet into military airline, while the other half concentrated on flying domestic passengers.
Truly, American Airlines stands for everything American, even today and this is one credit and distinction that no one can take away from this airline.
