History Of American Book Awards

The United States of America has always promoted writers and authors, be it fiction writing, poetry writing or any other form of writing. Some of the best selling books come from the United States and invariably these books manage to capture the attention of the entire world. Hence, it is but natural that the country would make efforts to recognize literary talent and excellence.

The history of the American Book Awards goes back to several years. It was introduced by the Before Columbus Foundation, which is a non-profit educational and service organization. The Foundation believes in not only promoting but also disseminating contemporary American literature, which highlights the cultural diversity of the country.

The American Book Awards was incorporated in the year 1978 after the Board of Directors of the Foundation agreed that it should constitute an award that honors writers of American literature without taking into consideration race, creed, sex, cultural origin, genre, or advertisement for the book. In fact, the most unique aspect of the award is that there are categories or quota. The sole criterion for winning the award is that the judges should consider the contribution as being outstanding and add something meaningful to American literature.

The American Book Awards goes one step further and ensures that all the winners of the award are treated equally. Even the publishers, who published the winning books, are honored and felicitated for willing to take the risks for publishing these books. In addition, there is a special award for writers who have not published books recently. This award is similar to a Lifetime Achievement Award and is given to writers who have had an impact on American literature.

The award does not carry any prize or cash reward. The judging panel is made up of writers, editors and publishers who come together to nominate as well as select winners for the American Book Awards. Any and everyone can submit their work for the award, as there is no form to apply or application fee. Just two copies of the book have to be mailed to the Before Columbus Foundation before 31 December each year in order for a writer to be eligible for nomination for the following year. The award is open to all genres and there is no restriction on the number of titles that can be submitted. The American Book Awards also accepts new editions or reprints of lost classics for the award.
