History Of The Turban

Many Hollywood actresses of yesteryears made it chic to wear turbans. It was considered a stylish accessory to accentuate an outfit and it also served to protect the hair from getting all messed up in the breeze. However, the turban has been around for some time now and it is believed that the first time this accessory appeared was in Sudan. However, this was a long time ago and there are different ways that a turban can be worn and draped. In fact, there are some many variations and the way the turban is worn changes from one region to another.

In ancient times, the people from Persia wore a cone-shaped cap that was encircled by bands of cloth. And, in the sandy desert regions of the Sudan, the turbans were slightly different. They protected the head and the face. It was basically a wrapped cloth that protected the head and the end was used to cover the face partially, so that it is not exposed to the swirling sand. It is believed that with time, the concept of covering the head with a cloth spread to other countries.

Even the Native Americans in the United States used to protect their head with a wrap. This was made either from cloth or animal hide. In Turkey, during the Ottoman Empire, the turban revealed a person's social standing in the society. It was just the elite and rich of the society who wore turbans. These were made from a wrapped cloth to form a huge cone with a projection at the top of the turban. These turbans were quite big in size.

The island of Cyprus was also known to wear a variation of the turban called keffiyeh. This is possible because of the Arab, Turkish and Persian influences that island had. However, even mainland Europe had its share of turban wearers during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. During these periods, the men wore wrappings around the head that looked very much like turbans. However, with social status being of supreme importance during these periods, the turbans were removed when the man was in the presence of a person of high social status.

According to historical records, turbans were first mentioned towards the latter half of the 14th century when the Moorish were seeing a downfall in Spain. The men used to have beards, moustaches and elaborate hairstyles, and covered their head with cloth wrapped around the head. At times, the men would also wrap a neck cloth around the head to form a turban. Usually, the turban was worn over a crown, skull cap or a long bonnet.

The history of the turban is rich and diverse, with each region in the world sporting its own form of the turban. Today, some religious faiths advocate the turban, while others wear it as a cultural thing or a fashion statement.
