One of the first superheroes to burst into the field of comic characters was Superman. Today, we all know that Superman has a blue outfit and red cape. However, the blue outfit has a symbol on the chest. Have you ever thought how did the S shield symbol of Superman come into being? What could the history be of Superman's shield symbol?

The creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, are the ones who deserve the credit for coming up with Superman's shield symbol. When the creators were designing and coming up with the superhero, they came up with the S shield symbol for Superman, as it represented the first letter in the character's name. While there may have been misgivings in the beginning about the shield symbol, it turned out to be a great gamble for Siegel and Shuster. However, what is interesting is how the duo came about the Superman shield symbol.

Initially, the creators had designed a symbol that was quite similar to a police badge. It looked like a shield. This occurred in the year 1938. However, over the initial years of Superman being brought into the world, many changes were done. Finally, the creators decided to use an inverted pentagon, which was bold and yellow in color, and house in the pentagon was the S logo of Superman in red.

It is believed that the diamond shape of the log represent strength of character and the superhero's courage, which we all know that Superman does not lack. Also, if you look at it symbolically, diamond is the hardest substance on earth. It is known to be durable and hence, this trait gets associated with Superman.

By using the red and yellow in the shield, Siegel and Shuster tried to bring forth Superman's dignity and power. In addition, if you check Superman's history and past, you will realize that he came from a planet called Krypton that had a red sun called Roa. The yellow, on the other hand, represents Earth's sun from which Superman derives his power. Hence, these colors symbolized Superman's past.

So, this is Superman shield symbol's history, which many Superman fans are often unaware of.
