The first Super Bowl, now called Super Bowl I, was held on 15 January 1967 and in 2011, Super Bowl XLV was played for the 2010 football season. The Super Bowl history is extremely interesting for people who love sports, especially American football. When the National Football League and the American Football League merged, it was decided that the two champions from each league would play against one another until the merger became official in the year 1970. This season finale game would be called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Once the merger took place, the leagues were re-named as conferences and the final game was due to be played between two teams that were champions in each of the conferences.
The first Super Bowl game, which was not called Super Bowl at that time, was help between Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers. The Green Bay Packers were the champions of the NFL Conference, while the Kansas City Chiefs were the top team from the AFL Conference. The Packers were the first champions, defeating Kansas City 35-10.
How Super Bowl got its name is a very interesting story. The owner of Kansas City Chiefs was Lamar Hunt. He was also the person responsible for forming the rival American Football League in the 1960. As both NFL and AFL became popular, there were constant fights between the fans and players. This led the two leagues to speak about merger in the year 1966. Hunt was looking for a name to give to the seasonal finale game, and he came up with the name Super Bowl when he saw a Super Ball belonging to his daughter. However, the name was not used for the next couple of years, but it gave rise to a game that caught the imagination of the American people. The championship game became an instant success and more and more people wanted to view.
The first game was played in Los Angeles, in the Memorial Coliseum. More than 61 thousand fans came to watch the game and another 60 million saw the game on television. After winning the game, each player from the Green Bay Packers was given a bonus of $15,000, while the players from Kansas City received $7,500 each. The televisions made a killing charging between $75,000 and $85,000 to companies that wanted to air their one-minute ads during half time and before the start of the game. Of course, today the same slots cost millions, but the amount was huge for its time. It was unheard of.
